Bicycle Bus Starting Up Again PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ken Trenholm
Thursday, 13 May 2010 14:22
The Bicycle Bus is starting Monday May 17.

We won't be having any prizes this time around as I'm working hard to organize other events such as a lobster carnival family bicycle event on July 11th and I'm trying to get prizes for that.

I'm thinking that if we start 5 minutes earlier, that would be best, leaving Greenfield at 8:10 am instead of 8:15 am last year to make sure our SIS riders make it to school and not have to rush to class.

If students going to Greenfield, wanted to meet at 2 Darby Drive and bike to Greenfield together, that is an option too.

If anyone is interested in volunteering for a trip or tip, let me know.

Thanks so much!

Summerside Bicycle Bus Summary PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ken Trenholm

As the Summerside Bicycle Bus prepares for a new season of safe bicycling to and from school, the project's organizer and parent, Ken Trenholm of Summerside, provides a snapshot of the Summerside Bicycle Bus in the Fall of 2009.

"The healthy bicycle to school option only takes 15 minutes to bicycle compared to twice the amount of time on a traditional school bus," says Ken Trenholm.

"There is so much benefit in having a resource that helps children develop lifelong physical activity habits as well as research that connects pre-classroom cardiovascular exercise with school performance."

The majority of the bicycle-to-school route is on the Confederation Trail.

With Awards such as Subway Healthy Start Award (the class with the most students participating in a classroom) where all the students in the class enjoyed a healthy Subway snack in the morning, the Heart & Stroke Foundation Top School Award (the school with the most students participating), the Medicine Shoppe Top Cyclist of the Week Award (the cyclist who participated the most per school) where students were awarded prize money for bicycling to and from school, and free prizes given away by MacQueen's Bicycle Stop in Charlottetown on Prize Fridays, the project had something for everyone.

The winners of the Medicine Shoppe Top Cyclist Weekly awards were as follows (with the value of their prize money to be used toward a new bicycle fund).

  • Colin Stark (Elm Street) $20.00
  • Christain Moase (Elm Street) $30.00
  • Carter Moase (Elm Street) $90.00
  • Randy Corkum (Elm Street) $135.00
  • Brianna Corkum (SIS) $168.00
  • Austin Trenholm (Greenfield) $168.00
  • Alysha Trenholm (Elm Street) $168.00

The overall top classroom was Mme Marie-Ann Roy's Grade 5 French Immersion class in Elm Street.  The class had an incredible 126 one-way trips back and forth to / from school.

The overall top school for the duration of the project was Elm Street.  The students who participated from Elm Street bicycled a total of 189 one-way trips back and forth to / from school.

ABOUT THE SUMMERSIDE BICYCLE BUS
The Summerside Bicycle Bus is a concept that bicycling to school can be both fun and safe for children and includes supervision of at least one adult (parent, grandparent, community member) at all times.  The Bicycle Bus picks students enroute before arriving at Greenfield and departing (at 8:15 am) and travels along the Confederation Trail and picking up other students before reaching the final destinations: Elm Street, Summerside Intermediate, and then Parkside School.

At the end of the school day, the Bicycle Bus departs Elm Street at 3:05 pm and makes a stop at Summerside Intermediate / Parkside before turning around and returning to Greenfield.  The Bus can also pick up Greenfield Elementary students at 3:00 pm and these students can travel to the other schools before being returned back to Greenfield for additional exercise.

Volunteers are needed for Tuesdays and Thursdays to help keep the Bicycle School Bus in operation for the next few weeks, says the Bicycle Bus organizer, Ken Trenholm.

"An adult leader is instrumental in ensuring the children arrive to school safely."

Without enough adult volunteers Trenholm is worried that the bicycle bus may not operate every day of the week.

The first day of the Summerside Bicycle Bus was a lot of fun.  We had 5 kids plus myself and my two-year-old.  5 kids who would not have biked to school if it was not for the bicycle bus---then, my 5-year-old did the bicycle bus in the afternoon....so six kids....  A special thank you to the kids in the video and those who rode during the day: Georgia, Brianna, Randy, Colin, Alysha, Alayna, and 2-year-old Aaron.  The CTV Live at 5 news item by Dan Viau is also included below.  We are needing  volunteers.  Prizes this Friday for the kids.

Bicycle BusMy daughter (Alysha) and myself are attempting to organize a Bicycle School Bus this year as my daughter (Alysha) is moving from Greenfield to Elm Street.

We will be organizing a West Summerside bus and hopefully if this works out well we may be able to find some parents to work on the East Summerside route.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Ken Trenholm.  I'm trained in the Sprockids model (http://www.sprockids.com/), have my Bachelor of Social Work degree, Founder of the Biking for Breakfast Challenge (www.bikingforbreakfast.com), Founder of the Summerside Cycling Club (www.summersidecycling.com), and have four amazing children.

Now back to the purpose of this note.

A description about the benefits, route, and needs follows...
